The Washington Post’s slogan is what we are feeling today

We knew it was going to be a close election, but there was still hope in the back of our minds.

Waking up today and looking at the results, that hope is gone. There’s only shock and disbelief. How could this happen again?

Checking the results on the website of the Washington Post, the first thing that catches your eye is their slogan “Democracy Dies in Darkness”. This is exactly how a lot of people are feeling today. On a bright and sunny morning, it still feels like there is darkness glooming on the horizon.

Democracy has died.

Dark times are ahead.

I thought they might have added the slogan today. Turns out, it has been there since 2017. For the last four years, democracy has been slowly dying, one principle at a time.

In the darkness of the night, the last principles of democracy have passed away. Declaring premature victory, questioning the legitimacy of votes, and threatening court orders seems like the final nail in the coffin of democracy.

No matter the result of the election, democracy is the loser either way.

In Washington D.C., 90% of the votes were for the Democrats, and other big cities…
