I Will Never Have a Dream Job

How can you pick one dream job when all of them sound interesting?

If you would have asked me about my dream job as a child, you would have gotten a different answer every other week. I always had a lot of different interests and most of them could be turned into a career.

With some obvious exceptions, I can find aspects of almost every job that sound exciting and interesting to me. However, I can also see the downsides of most jobs almost immediately. If anything, my dream job would be a combination of at least 20 different jobs and to my knowledge, a job like this doesn’t exist.

Specialists vs. Generalists

Our global economy is extremely diverse and very technological, which means most jobs require a high degree of specialization. Modern machines and software are incredibly complicated and you need a lot of education, training, and experience to be able to work with them. It takes many years for someone to become an expert in a field, but it comes at the cost of specialization and they won’t have a general knowledge about other adjacent domains.

From a company’s point of view, it makes sense to hire these experts for their job openings. It’s very valuable to have somebody who fundamentally understands how a machine works, can…
