That’s true, it can be more entertaining watching less skilled players play the game. There was a big Twitch event in the summer, where popular streamers played against each other. I didn’t watch it at the time, but I imagine there were a lot of blunders and wild swings in the games.

There are actually a few chess variants that try to tackle the problem of too many draws. Most of them are a little bit weird in my opinion, but AlphaZero (the DeepMind neural network chess engine) was trained with a variant where castling isn’t allowed, which makes it more difficult to get the king to a safer location and supposedly leads to more decisive games. The traditional rules will probably remain the most popular version, but there might be more tournaments with slightly tweaked rules in the future, especially in the chess esports branch.
